![]() I think this is a less than optimal solution but for the moment I just keep an eye on the coolant level and top off as required myself. I took mine to the dealer, they kept it for 4 days, ran all sorts of pressure tests, coolant system tests and diagnostics which apparently even required authorization from German HQ and according to them there is absolutely nothing wrong with the car, I should just take it back to them to add more coolant when the level drops. There have also been reports of the leaky EGRs being at fault.īMW still won't issue an official statement/recall/whatever, even though it seems to be a pretty widespread occurrence. There have been reports of turbos being replaced because of a leaky seal in the cooling circuit, where water was just getting burnt by the turbo. Some people have found spotting from dry coolant around the reservoir cap, suggesting the caps leak. There are several theories floating around besides the factory underfilling. No apparent leaks, no puddles in the floor, no splatter in the engine bay. ![]() We've refilled or taken the car to the dealer to be refilled and tested many times and the coolant requires refilling every few thousand miles. On the other hand, there are some B58s and B48s, like mine, that just seem to eat the coolant. It gets refilled for free at the dealer and that's that. It appears to be that they are underfilled or improperly bled at the factory and after a few thousand miles from new the level drops. Is this normal? There seem to be two tanks with screw tops? Why two? What should I do? Lowering the freezing point of the water found in your engines cooling system. BTW I just realize my contradictory statement above with the watter wetter. When winter looms and the cold weather sets in, antifreeze becomes a must. Since that is the case, I will use only BMW coolent and distilled water/water wetter for my baby so I don't become a member of the yearly cooling system overhaul club. ![]() I will still use distilled water and OEM coolant, but I thought it was an interesting conversation. This wouldn't bother me if our cooling system was like any other car's and didn't need to be overhauled every 80K miles. He's been in the radiator business for 35+ years and basically said that I wouldnt know any better since radiator work is not something I do everyday, in a nice way. We started talking about antifreeze and I mentioned that I used BMW OEM coolant and he just laughed again and said BMW recommends it because it costs more. I inquired if this was the same for BMW's and he just laughed and said that BMW's dont need it either. ![]() But we got on the topic of distilled vs tap (I had used distilled in my Jeep too) and he said it doesnt make any difference in any car. When I did my cooling system overhaul I made the trek to the stealer for the coolant and grocery store for the distilled.Īnyway, I had my Jeep into a local radiator only shop regarding, well doesnt matter.
